JOB CONTEXT
Background:
In 2024, we established the Advocates Fund Policy and commenced paying bar course tuition and examination fees. In the policy, we have a bond agreement with all those who have completed and those who have been admitted to the bar, as well as those in the process of completing their bar exams. The mode of delivery in Kenya and Uganda is different. The Kenyan students attend classes virtually and physically in the evening every working day from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. They also attend four classes on Saturday to participate in all nine modules each week. However, in Uganda, the mode of learning is only physical, and students need to attend physical classes from Monday to Friday from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm. Therefore, in Kenya, it may be possible for students to continue performing their employment roles as they pursue their studies. But this may not be possible in Uganda. Justice Defenders aims to assemble a team of individuals with lived experience to inform the development of a policy that supports our people in achieving a work-study-life balance while taking the Bar course in Uganda and Kenya, ultimately leading to their successful admission to the Bar.
