As a member of the Vandenberg Facilities Infrastructure team, you will work with a group of elite engineers across multiple disciplines to design, build, and activate infrastructure that will enable orbital launch capability for the largest rocket in the world. This position is based in Vandenberg, CA. We are seeking a senior mechanical engineer with deep expertise in HVAC systems and strong knowledge of control, particularly in control system architecture design, programming, and implementation. RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop and issue drawings, design documentation, and reports for aerospace, industrial, and commercial facility mechanical & HVAC engineering projects
Perform all calculations necessary for HVAC and piping design, including load calculations, airflow, and pressure drop analysis
Lead the design, architecture, programming, and implementation of HVAC control systems (BMS/BAS) for complex industrial and launch-critical facilities
Develop control sequences of operation, program DDC/PLC logic, and configure control networks for optimal performance and reliability
Drive coordination and design necessary to obtain local, state, and federal permits as it relates to building and mechanical permits
Manage the mechanical and controls aspects of construction projects in the field, including quality control, conflict resolution, and coordination of a multi-discipline contractor team
Write, negotiate, and manage construction contracts with subcontractors across multiple disciplines through contract close-out
Interact with contractors, fabricators, owners, and internal clients to develop project requirements, control system architecture, schedule, and cost estimates prior to project implementation
Own budget & schedule for a scope of work within a multi-disciplinary team, including all facets of engineering, permitting, procurement, and construction
Resolve design and construction conflicts in the field in real time, with particular focus on controls integration and troubleshooting
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or other engineering discipline
5+ years of professional experience in design or build of mechanical, HVAC, or facility mechanical/electrical/plumbing infrastructure
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
Professional Engineering (PE) license
Strong expertise in HVAC controls system architecture design, programming, and implementation
Proficiency in developing control strategies, programming DDC/PLC systems, and configuring building automation platforms [e.g., Tridium Niagara, Siemens, Johnson Controls (Metasys), Allen-Bradley, or equivalent]
Deep knowledge of HVAC operation and design principles including refrigeration, chillers, boilers, air handling equipment, and their associated control systems
Experience with control communication protocols (BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks, OPC-UA, etc.)
Familiarity with National Electric Code, ASHRAE, National Fire Protection Association, International Building Code, and California Building Code
Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, or similar design software
Knowledge of processes of governing permitting agencies such as building departments and/or environmental agencies
Understanding of other disciplines such as mechanical, electrical, piping, geotechnical, and surveying
Ability to quickly assess an issue and assist technicians/contractors with troubleshooting and repairs of both mechanical and controls systems
Experience with project management of construction projects including estimating, cost control, schedule, and contractor management
Experience with at least three of the following project delivery phases: 1) conceptual layout and high-level trade studies 2) detailed engineering design and development 3) request for proposals/quotes, contract issue 4) supervision of construction to completion 5) work punch lists and certificate of occupancy (CO) with building official
Sound communication skills with the ability to clearly explain complex control architectures to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to pass Air Force background checks for Vandenberg Space Force Base
Ability to travel to other SpaceX project sites to support work
When necessary, must be willing to work long hours and weekends to support launch and critical project timelines
Willing to work in extreme outdoor environments – heat, cold, rain, wind, open ocean
Work performed in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, and noise
Physical effort including standing, lifting, and carrying light weight such as materials or equipment (ability to lift up to 35 lbs. unassisted)
