Job Title: Associate Principal Engineer Role Overview: Design Engineering is an agile and creative team who are deeply passionate about great design and disruptive solutions. As an Associate Principal Engineer in the Design Engineering function based at our Shanghai or Shenzhen office in China, your primary role will be to collaborate with Dyson internal teams and JDM partners to ensure the successful delivery of mechanical designs and product integration. Drawing upon your technical expertise and leadership skills, you will ensure the quality and timely delivery of work produced by our development partners in a cost effective manner. Your influential recommendations and decisions will contribute to the development of user-focused solutions that align with design and project goals, while also helping to improve the tools and processes that support our engineering work. This role is based in our Shenzhen office, with the expectation of working closely with JDM partners from their site. Responsibilities: Requirements Management: Promote the adoption of requirement management practices and support project teams in integrating best practices into their work processes. Contribute to the creation of design requirements and identify missing requirements that are essential for project success. Ensure that JDM correctly interpret and implement requirements throughout the development phases. Planning and reporting: Collaborate with Dyson internal teams and JDM to identify dependencies, risks and mitigation strategies within design engineering context. Assess, plan and align activities to achieve design and project goals. Monitor and report on progress to stakeholders. Manage project scope changes by providing well- justified proposals for resource and schedule adjustments. Design management: Oversee the development of mechanical design solutions by our JDM teams, including the integration of electrical parts. Drive an efficient way of working for design reviews and issue management, ensuring solutions follow robust engineering principles, comply with Dyson quality standards, and are delivered in a timely and cost- effective manner. Build evaluation: Evaluate the build process to confirm its effectiveness and efficiency in achieving design and project goals. Assess the quality of build outputs against the requirements, ensuring they meet the established standards. Test evaluation: Provide technical guidance in test planning and the development of test methods. Drive the execution and reporting of testing activities, ensuring that the tests are conducted properly and results are accurately documented. Design maturity assessment: Evaluate the outcomes of design iterations, including performance, robustness, manufacturability, and residual risks, to clearly report the achieved design maturity level and guide future design cycles. Change and Part Approval: Review and approve Change Request, Part approval or Deviation Request, ensuring the estimated efforts, risks and benefits are satisfactory before proceeding. JDM engagement: Understand and evaluate the JDM partner's design and manufacturing capabilities in achieving the design proposal. Provide subject matter expertise in developing robust Request for Information (RFI), Request for Proposal (RFP) and Statement of Work (SOW). Tools and process improvement: Identify gaps in design engineering tools, workflows and documentation. Drive the adoption of more efficient, scalable processes and support the development or refinement of tools and process that improve design quality, collaboration and delivery efficiency. Competencies: • A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, Mechatronics Engineering, or equivalent. • Strong understanding of product development methodology. Proven ability to scope development work, decompose complex problems into manageable tasks, plan work based on need, and eliminate non- valueadding activities. • Strong knowledge and application of Systems Engineering, Requirements Management, and Risk Management in product development. • Established track record of developing robust engineering solutions from concept to market launch. In- depth knowledge of manufacturing and assembly techniques for plastic injection molding, metal stamping, die- casting, rubber parts, along with working knowledge of motor and pump. Capable of challenging tool makers, molders, and assembly suppliers on their technical proposals and driving improvements. • Skilled at estimating the cost of various design options and selecting the most cost- effective direction. • Practical knowledge of 3D CAD, PLM systems, and analysis packages. • Exceptional analytical and problem- solving abilities using a variety of methodologies. • Strong leadership abilities with a track record of influencing others to successfully deliver results on time. Experience in collaborating with JDM partners, demonstrating resourcefulness and maintaining trust and credibility. • Excellent communication skills with stakeholders at all levels, both written and verbal, in English and Chinese.
